What does a "Safe Space" for critical thinking look like?

What are the boundaries on acceptable Halloween costumes?  Which authors should we study?  Which ideas can enter our classrooms?  Which have to stay outside?

Our first reaction to a test of our values or a challenge to our identity is emotional - the layer of our experience so effectively sampled by social media.  But what do we do with our superior minds below that first reaction?  There is a discomfort in walking through the minefield of today's political classroom but the easily forgotten (and often poorly defined) tool of critical thinking can help us work more deeply and push the mines to the surface where they're less threatening.

Clearly I have extended the minefield metaphor beyond its use but who wouldn't want to go to a pro-d session on defusing bombs?
